Partnership and Progress: Increasing Retirement Benefit Knowledge for DOC Employees Statewide

In 2024, MOSERS partnered with the Department of Corrections (DOC) as part of our education outreach program. This collaboration resulted in the launch of on-site benefit education opportunities for DOC employees at correctional institutions across the state.

MOSERS Education Outreach Coordinator Lisa Campbell has been leading this initiative from the start. Throughout the year, Lisa coordinates educational efforts at all 19 DOC adult institutions statewide, providing individual benefit counseling and on-site educational seminars for employees at every career stage.

Participating in these on-site events offers employees several benefits. Staff members earn training credit for attending, and seminars are easily accessible, requiring no travel or time off from work. This collaborative effort with DOC simplifies the process for employees to gain valuable knowledge about their retirement benefits.

Lisa explained the importance of this partnership with DOC.

“I love what I do as the MOSERS education outreach coordinator. I am passionate about helping employees better understand their MOSERS benefits, mainly because of my 17-year break in service with the state. Back then, I didn’t understand the importance of longevity when it came to my future pension. Truthfully, I didn’t fully understand the value of my MOSERS benefits until after my return to state service,” she shared. “Usually, at every seminar I present, I will have at least one person take the time to mention how valuable they felt the seminar was, and that makes it all worthwhile.”

One seminar attendee shared, “It was extremely valuable having the presentation at the worksite. It allowed me and my staff to return to our regular workday, where if we were offsite, we would have had no productivity.”

Another attendee stated, “Having the small group where you can ask questions and get personalized assistance is invaluable. Please keep the on-site presentations going. Staff can't always get away to go to something off-site.”

When they can get away, DOC employees are welcome to enroll in an online webinar or a traditional in-person seminar at various locations across the state. In addition to the presentations from MOSERS and MO Deferred Comp, these webinars and seminars include outside speakers from MCHCP and the Social Security Administration.

Lisa’s work with the DOC education outreach program led to her being named a 2025 Communicator of the Year Finalist by the National Association of Government Communicators (NAGC). The participant survey results are very high for this new outreach program, which has significantly improved access to retirement education.
