1099-R Tax Forms Now Available

Jan 22, 2026, 10:30 AM

We began mailing paper copies of 1099-R forms on January 21 and will mail all of them by January 31. You will need this important form to file your taxes.

We sent you a 1099-R for 2025 if you were a:

  • Member who received retirement benefits
  • Survivor or beneficiary who received monthly benefit payments
  • Survivor or beneficiary who received a final benefit payment
  • Ex-spouse who received a monthly benefit
  • Former state employee who elected a refund of employee contributions to MOSERS

Check out the flyer, Understanding Your 1099-R Form, for more information.

How can I access my 1099-R?
  • US Postal Service - Watch for yours in your mailbox.
  • Online - To access your 1099-R online, log in to myMOSERS and select Tax Documents from the Member Dashboard. Logging in is not required unless you prefer an electronic copy of your 1099-R or need a replacement.

If you turned 59½ in 2025, you may receive two 1099-R forms from MOSERS, each with a different distribution code. If you do, use both when filing your taxes.

MOSERS does not send W-2 Forms for wages earned as an active state employee — those will come from your employer.

Can I change my federal tax withholding?

Your retirement benefits are subject to federal income tax. You can change your withholding election online at any time during the year by logging in to myMOSERS.

Select Update Tax Withholding under the I want to… menu, then complete the online IRS W-4P Form. Keep in mind, the amount of withholdings you elect does not change your tax liability.

MOSERS staff does not provide tax advice and cannot advise you on how to fill out tax forms or your tax liability as it pertains to your MOSERS pension. We suggest you contact the IRS and/or a qualified tax advisor to determine your tax liability and withholding amounts.

Am I eligible for the Public Pension Exemption?

If you receive benefits from a public pension system (such as MOSERS) and file a Missouri state tax return, you may qualify for the Public Pension Exemption. If eligible, you could be exempt from paying some or all Missouri state income tax on income you receive from MOSERS. Visit the Missouri Department of Revenue's Public Pension Exemption page or view our Taxes page for more information.

If you are unsure whether you qualify, contact the Missouri Department of Revenue or ask your tax professional.
