How MOSERS Long-Term Disability Benefits Can Help
Did you know that MOSERS provides long-term disability (LTD) insurance to most actively employed members? If you experience an illness or an accident that leaves you unable to work, you have access to resources.
Long-term disability insurance provides partial income replacement if you’re unable to work for an extended period. This coverage is issued by Standard Insurance Company (The Standard).
- Coverage Cost - There is no cost to you for LTD insurance. Your employer pays your premiums if you’re an active employee.
- Income Replacement - LTD benefits can replace up to 60% of your pre-disability earnings, less any deductible income. (Your LTD benefit is taxable.)
- Creditable Service - You will continue to earn creditable service toward your retirement for each month you receive disability benefits.
- Waiver of Premium - If you become disabled, you may be eligible to continue your life insurance coverage and not pay the premium.
- Survivor Benefits - Your spouse or child(ren) may qualify for survivor benefits if you die while receiving LTD benefits.
- Contact The Standard at (844) 505-6026 or file a claim online.
- Let your HR representative know that you have filed an LTD claim with The Standard and request that your employer complete the Employer Statement.
- The Standard will review your claim once they receive all the required information and will inform you in writing of the outcome. This process can take anywhere from one week to four months.
- See The Standard’s Frequently Asked Questions About Filing A Long Term Disability Claim or read our Long-Term Disability Insurance Handbook for more information.
If you’re approved, LTD benefit payments will begin:
- Once the 90-day benefit waiting period has ended, or
- When your sick leave benefits expire (whichever is later).
- LTD benefits will be issued on the first day of the month after your approval date.
LTD benefit payments will end when any of the following happen:
- You are no longer disabled.
- You begin receiving early (reduced) retirement benefits.
- You are eligible to receive normal (unreduced) retirement benefits.
- You begin receiving benefits under any other group long-term disability policy.
- You return to full-time active employment.
- You are able to work, but do not accept available employment.
- You die.
